surface motion is a collaboration between art director Markus Weisbeck (surface) and director Oliver Hardt (signature films). The project started in 2008, when they began collaborating on the creative direction of the annual German Design Award ceremony, the country‘s highest distinction in the field of design. In the following years they created a series of expressive artworks for the internationally renowned event. Their artistic approach integrates multiple disciplines, including modernist film experiments, cutting-edge analogue and digital motion graphics, spatial projections, stage design, and stage direction.
Bauhaus Experiments: Animations for the German Design Award show 2010
Documentary video
After Lazlo Moholy-Nagy in 2009, two further Bauhaus protagonists and their experiments served as reference for the design of the basic visual forms for the design award show in 2010: the body-based drawing school of Johannes Itten and the mechanical-kinetic form generators of Joost Schmidt. The motion design for the event comprises graphical compositions for 50 prize winners, moderation screens as well as musical visualizations for Eric D. Clark, who accompanied the ceremony musically.
